House Amsterdam Oud-Zuid

Renovation and interior design of a 19th century residence in the posh Amsterdam Oud-Zuid area. The urban family house has got high end finishes.

Renovation of residence
The residence is situated in the posh Amsterdam neighbourhood “Oud-Zuid” near the Vondelpark. At the end of the 19th century, the grounds next to the park were owned by the construction company “Willemspark”, hence the name Willemspark-quarter. In this company, Eight (Baptist) local people were united to prevent more wealthy people from moving to new locations outside of Amsterdam such as Haarlem or Het Gooi. Due to overpopulation, lots of new buildings and smelly canals, downtown Amsterdam began to lose its charm. Because of good train connections with trains and tramways, living outside became very popular at the end of this era. The new quarter to be built on the grounds of the WIllemspark company would be a distinguished neighbourhood with dignified houses, a private park and wide streets. This house was built in 1893. In 1977, the property has been thoroughly renovated including a new foundation and rear facade. Since then the interior of the house has not been updated.

Design
The project is twofold. Firstly, the front façade is completely cleaned and restored. Secondly the complete interior of the residence will is re designed including an extension. The current house has a surface of 200 m2 adding an extra 15 m2 from the extension.

The lower ground floor is transformed into a large living kitchen with cooking island and bar. Besides the kitchen there is also guestroom with en-suite bathroom situated on this floor. On the ground floor, the historic front and back rooms are fully restored by returning the closets in combinations with en-suite doors between the two rooms. The ceilings are decorated with ornaments from the 19th century. The back room has got a modern touch by creating an inside window looking towards the hallway. Coming inside through the front door, residents and guests will have a direct view into the garden. On the first floor there is a master bedroom with access to the en-suite bathroom and walk-in-closet. Two other bedrooms are situated on this top floor with the smaller one currently designated as study.
